KLIPSCH LA SCALA II REVIEW

..

Whilst researching the La Scala II, we across these reviews. They talk of exactly what we hear in this speaker. Enjoy reading the reviews.

I didn’t stop to analyze the sound; I just enjoyed the music and remarked to myself what a wonderful loudspeaker the Klipsch La Scala was; warm, rich, generous, and above all, dynamic.

The La Scala II’s midrange and treble were exceptionally smooth. I experienced no listening fatigue, even when using solid-state amp. As for serious horn colourations – you know, the cupped-hands sort of stuff – I didn’t hear any.

These speakers could image! Maybe that’s the last thing you expect from a big-box speaker. The soundstage was spacious, the performers precisely placed. Their imaging was excellent – side to side, front to back, up and down.

The La Scala II really shone when it comes to dynamics – macrodynamic swings in particular, but microdynamics too: those subtle, low level dynamic shifts. The music got moving with these speakers, whether it was Gustav Mahler, a good classical piano recording, popular standards, or big-band jazz. Or heavy rock, for that matter.

To get dynamics like this elsewhere, you might be looking at a very expensive pair of speakers – $20,000 or $30,000 a pair, or more – plus equally expensive, heroic, high-power amplification.

These speakers are fun to listen to.

Kudos to Klipsch for getting these horns so right. Kudos, also, for keeping the Heritage Series alive instead of just trading on the name.

I purchased my La Scala’s in 1975 after a year of auditioning almost every speaker available. I kept coming back to the La Scala’s. I would match them against virtually anything in the market – even 35+ years later. A room full of crystal clear sound, the type that gives you a little tingle at the bottom of your spine.

I live in Melbourne Australia, I bought a pair of La Scala in 1980. I was amazed by the sound. I sold them a year later because me and my wife were buying a house and we wanted to raise extra funds. This guy wanted to hear them at his place. We went there and he hooked them up and played a Pat Metheny track. I was stunned by the sound although I have used them everyday for 2 years!!! He did an AB comparison with his own speaker. He did not say a word and asked me how much and I sold them for the price I paid new. I have regretted selling them ever since. Oh by the way, I have been divorced for over eight years. Wished I sold my wife instead.

Although I think of myself as an audiophile I do not subscribe to much of the snake oil being sold by the so called “Experts” in the field. If you think large horn loaded speakers don’t image well you need to listen a pair of Klipsch La Scalas. The La Scalas express true dynamics, what the audio media calls “macrodynamics.” Combine this with an effortless, (super efficient) and expansive presentation and you have one of the best experiences in higher end audio for a fraction of what the audio media says you’ll need to spend to join their nose in the air club. The highly efficient Klipsch design opens up the listener to a host of low watt vacuum tube amplifier choices which in turn brings out the very best in the horn loaded La Scalas. You don’t need to take a second mortgage on your house to enjoy a high end listening experience.

The La Scala is one of the most versatile speakers in the Klipsch Heritage series “lineup”. Utilizing the same driver, horn loading and crossover technology as the Klipschorn, the LaScala delivers the characteristic rich, full spectrum and balanced sound for which Klipsch speakers are renowned. I’m not a “professional reviewer”. I am an owner. I have the LaScalas along with pairs of the others in the Heritage line. The most salient feature about the LaScalas, from an aesthetic point of view, they are among the most beautiful speakers ever made. The unique design lends itself, together with the different choices of wood finish to suit even the most demanding buyer. Of all the Klipsch (and other) speakers I have ever owned since 1971, my wife believes the LaScalas to be the prettiest. She’s hard to please, and that’s an important observation!! A couple important observations for prospective buyers: First, the LaScala is a very efficient (powerful) speaker. As in other reviews, the LaScala, like the others in the Heritage series, do not require outrageously expensive or powerful amplifiers. The spec sheet is correct…. one watt at one meter…. will hurt your ears!! As they do not require placement in the corners like their “big brother”, the Klipschorn, they will also absolutely fulfill the requirement for a complete room filling, critically clear and balanced sound. Don’t let any price consideration fool you. They are worth every bit and more of the modest price Klipsch asks, and unlike so many other so called “high end speakers” that cost far more, the LaScala’s will absolutely outperform and outlast the competition! They are handmade in the USA, use precision drivers and crossovers, and support from Klipsch is nothing less than the best in the business!!! Downside? Well…. after you hear a pair, you will question yourself as to why you never bought a pair of Klipsch before!!!

“The legendary Paul Klipsch was one of the pioneers of Horn loudspeakers. His original Klipschorn dates back to the 1940s, and (with updates) remains in production to the present day. Any speaker still being made after more than half a century has to have something going for it.” Jimmy Hughes

Second only to the legendary Klipschorn, the Klipsch La Scala II is one of the most popular products in the Heritage line of Klipsch loudspeakers. The La Scala II is a three-way horn-loaded loudspeaker sub-woofer. It comes with a 2-inch composite cone and is available in a number of finishes including walnut, cherry, and black ash.
